Traffic Calming on Rodman

Cabrillo residents have expressed concern about how fast some drivers travel up and down Rodman Drive. We recently contacted the County to inquire about measures that might be taken to slow traffic. Here are key points in their response.

Speed limit. The County recently lowered the speed limit on Rodman Drive from 35 MPH to 30 MPH. This was done automatically because the County is required by law to reevaluate speed limits every 5 years. Speed limits are based on the prevailing speed of traffic. During the recent speed survey, the County determined that the prevailing speed of traffic had actually decreased sufficiently to justify a lowering of the speed limit to 30 MPH, hence the change.
Speed humps. On fairly steep slopes like Rodman Drive, speed bumps/humps are not advised, as they constitute a launching hazard.
Painting speed limit. Another traffic-calming measure we inquired about was having the speed limit painted onto the roadway. The County's response was, "as with speed limits, painting the speed limit on the pavement does not generally cause drivers to slow down anymore than speed limit signs do." However, the idea will be considered when the traffic engineers return to work in January.

The CEPOA Annual Meeting is rescheduled for 10 AM on Saturday, January 9 in Zoom. We anticipate the meeting will be one hour long.
