Vacation rentals in the Coastal Zone are governed by County Code Section 23.08.165. The code specifies that rentals "shall not exceed four individual tenancies per calendar month"; otherwise, there are no special provisions for Los Osos.
Proposed Vacation Rental Guidelines for Los Osos were approved by the Los Osos Community Advisory Council in June 2018 and continue to make their way through the approval process. The last stop is the California Coastal Commission, and it's anticipated that the Guidelines will come before the Commission in the summer of 2021. Since August 2017, CEPOA’s official position is to oppose vacation rentals in Cabrillo Estates. We encourage Cabrillo Estates property owners to write to the Commission in support of the proposed Guidelines. Learn how.
Owners who wish to use their property as a vacation rental must obtain a minor use permit from the County. Each permit is considered on a case-by-case basis.
NEIGHBORS FOR LOS OSOS, which describes itself as "like-minded community members who see a need for vacation rental guidelines in order to preserve the character of our neighborhoods," has launched a website and petition to urge the the adoption of the LOCAC guidelines.
